Do you love adding cream to your coffee? I always do, but one day I ran out of coffee creamer in my kitchen and all I had available is coconut milk. To make up for the lack of creamer, I asked someone whether or not I can add coconut milk to coffee.
The answer I received was uncertain so I tried to solve the issue myself. I researched online for some benefits on using coconut milk along with some preparation ideas that you can try. If you want to know more about the details, continue reading below.
So, Can You Add Coconut Milk in Coffee?
Well, the answer is, yes, you can pour some coconut milk in your coffee to make it healthy and creamy. In fact, Nutritionist Aimee McNew suggests using it as part of your paleo diet. The creaminess of coconut milk is a great creamer for black coffee. If you want it extra sweet, you can add some maple syrup.
I prefer the canned coconut milk over the homemade variety because it is thicker and is ready to use. What I use is the Native Forest Organic Coconut Milk because it is unsweetened and organic. What are the Health Benefits of Coconut Milk?
The major reason why I made a switch from my regular creamer to coconut milk is the wide array of health benefits that I can get from its regular consumption. Several health benefits that you can expect include the following:
1. Improve Immune System
Coconut milk contains lauric acid which can help improve your immune system. This fatty acid helps fight diseases by demonstrating some antiviral and antibacterial qualities. Naturopathic doctor Erik Bakker even notes that coconut milk has antifungal properties which can help inhibit the growth of Candida.
2. Aids in Losing Weight
According to a 2003 study, the high amount of medium-chain triglycerides (MCT) in coconut milk may help you lose weight by increasing your energy expenditure. These fatty acids also make you feel full longer which can help curb your hunger for unhealthy foods. Also, coconut milk helps promote healthy digestive organs, hence fat is metabolized faster.
3. Promotes Good Heart Health
Lauric acid found in coconut milk is often associated with better heart health and lower cholesterol levels. This saturated fatty acid also helps clean the arteries of the heart making you lower your risk to atherosclerosis, a disease which causes heart attacks and strokes.
Selecting the Best Coconut Milk for Your Coffee
The best coconut milk that you can use should be close to being fresh. This means that if you opt for a commercial brand, look for the unsweetened and unpasteurized variety. As much as possible, avoid those with sugar, artificial sweetener, and preservatives.
If you buy a canned coconut milk, make sure that its label is marked BPA-free. Bisphenol-A or (BPA) is often used in cans to act as a protective lining inside, but it has been shown to cause certain health issues when it leaks into foods. If you’re able to secure some fresh coconut milk, make sure that you use it the same day it was pressed because it spoils very fast.
